Understanding Aging Skin
Before diving into skincare tips, let's dive briefly into the science behind aging skin. As we grow older, our skin naturally undergoes several transformations. Collagen and elastin production decreases, leading to reduced skin elasticity and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
Additionally, factors such as sun exposure, diet, and lifestyle choices can further accelerate the aging process, causing age spots, dryness, and sagging skin. Sadly that's the plain truth, but there's hope yet.
A Tailored Skincare Routine
1. Gentle Cleansing
Opt for a mild, hydrating cleanser that gently removes impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils, this is currently my favorite from Target.
Avoid harsh exfoliants that can irritate the skin and exacerbate dryness.
When drying your face after cleansing, Avoid rubbing your face dry, ONLY pat your face dry. You're causing wrinkles as you rub your face dry or even when you rub your eyes, that is a big NO NO!
2. Toner
Toners are oftentimes overlooked as an essential skincare product, viewed as a luxury, not a necessity. However, their function is way more important than one would think.
A toner will replenish hydration and when used with a cotton round it will help to remove any remnants of dirt and makeup left after cleansing. It can also help to restore your skin after cleansing, leaving your complexion calm, collected and oh so soft.
Toners act as a primer for the rest of the products you apply to your skin, such as serums, face oils and moisturizers. They are especially important when using oil-based serums as your skin thrives on the combination of oil and water. A face toner provides the water component, improving absorption and efficacy of your oil-based serum.
Adding a face toner to your daily skincare routine can often be the key to getting the best results from your products.
3. Moisturizing
Choose a rich, moisturizing cream and lotion to hydrate and nourish dry, aging skin.
Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides to lock in moisture and improve skin texture. I've been really loving this anti-aging moisturizer lately.
Don't forget to moisturize upward and moisturize your neck and chest. You can always reference my SKINCARE highlights over on Instagram if needed.
Under eye moisturizing is just as important as any facial moisturizer. So make sure to invest in a good eye cream and don't forget to get these gel eye patches. If you're under eyes swell due to lack of sleep or other, I hightly recommend them. The best part is you keep them refrigerated and you can skip the ice cold roller or not, extra care goes a long ways.
4. Sun Protection
Wear sunscreen daily with at least SPF 30 to shield your skin from harmful UV rays and prevent premature aging. Lately I've been using this because it gives me the extra hydration and coverage I desire with SPF included. We now live in a dryer climate therefore the extra hydration is needed both inside and out.
Don't forget to reapply sunscreen every throughout the day if needed, especially when outdoors for a long period of time.
5. Anti-Aging Ingredients
Incorporate skincare products with bakuchiol, retinol, antioxidants, and peptides to combat signs of aging such as wrinkles and loss of firmness.
Masking is crucial as we age, make sure to incorporate this into your weekly routine, day or night it helps with hydration, refining large pores, improving skin texture, absorbs excess oil and dirt, helps with clogged pores, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing elasticity and improving the look of breakouts.
Consult with your dermatologist to find the best anti-aging products suitable for your skin type if you're uncertain of what is best suited for your skin type.
Lifestyle Habits for Healthy Skin
1. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from within and maintain its elasticity.
In recent years I've learned that adding zero-sugar electrolytes helps with not only cellulite but obviously with keeping your hydrated, staying hydrated is key for our bodies wellbeing and skin.
2. Balanced Diet
Include antioxidant-rich foods in your diet such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts to promote skin health and combat free radical damage.
Excluding greasy foods and processed sugar helps with maintaining healthy skin.
Taking your multi-vitamins along with Vitamin D is just as important make sure to check out some of my favorites and recommendations in my Amazon storefront.
3. Adequate Sleep
Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your skin to repair and regenerate, promoting a youthful complexion.
Beauty sleep, is a literal thing I can't stress that enough. Personally I love my 8 hours of sleep anything less is unacceptable.
Magnesium has been a game changer for me in the last couple of years because just like our bodies, our sleep patterns change too and I've always suffered from insomnia. I highly recommend including Magnesium to your nightly routines.
4. Stress Management
Practice stress-relieving activities like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to reduce cortisol levels and prevent stress-related skin issues.
Exercise and movement play a big role in my life and keeping my stress levels at a minimum. I used to suffer from depression really bad until I implemented regular exercise and movement into my life and as ritual part of my lifestyle 5-6 days a week.
Supplements and vitamins have played a huge role in my life for the last 6 years, it has made a huge difference in how I feel and look as I continue to age. Don't skip out on those.
